Our Why

Most furniture today is cheap, toxic, and made overseas —
built to be replaced, not treasured.

At Alessandro & Maria Design, every piece is made to order from domestically sourced hardwoods, finished with non-toxic materials, and designed to last a lifetime. No trends. No shortcuts.

The furniture in your home shapes your everyday life. We build pieces you'll want to keep forever — and pass down when you're gone.

Two ways to order furniture from Alessandro & Maria Design

Custom projects make up most of our work. You can view our portfolio to see past custom projects for homeowners, churches, restaurants, and designers.

Once upon a time all of our furniture was custom built by a local builder. With us you don’t just get custom options but a relationship with myself, Alexander Lohn, who will both design and build the piece with you. More details on the process of custom work below.

"I cannot speak enough to Alex's craftsmanship. We have contracted him for four pieces: a beautiful coffee table that was custom designed, two comfortable kneelers, and a cutting board that has put up with a ton of abuse. Alex's items were fairly priced, delivered on-time, and have held up well over the years. He is also personable and extremely easy to work with, which is important for more expensive projects that involve considerable design input. If you're reading this, go with Alessandro and Maria Design!"

"100% recommend Alex and his team. He is an incredible craftsman. I've contracted multiple items from Alex over the years, and he always goes above and beyond. He has a knack for designing and producing exactly what you want, even if you don't have a fully formed idea."

“Alessandro did a wonderful job redoing the cord on our Danish dining chairs. They have been used daily for the last six years and look just as good as they did the day I picked them up. He is very skilled at what he does and I would recommend him without reservation if you're looking for any custom pieces.”

"We had a small cheap table for the past few years. Since getting a table from Alessandro and Maria design our beautiful new table has become the center of family meals and game nights. We all love it. It’s beautifully crafted and benches were also made to match perfectly. I highly recommend Alessandro and Maria design. Alex is a true craftsman and you can tell he takes pride in his work. If I could give him a million stars, I would."

"Alessandro and Maria Design is the kind of business you hope to find when looking for custom work. Alex built a table for our home that is solid, well-constructed, and clearly made to last. I’ve never loved a table and now thanks to Alex, I do. Highly recommended for anyone looking for quality that lasts."

“Having collaborated with Alex on three furniture projects, I highly recommend working with him should you have the opportunity. He understands woodworking on a very technical level and has excellent drafting skills. You pay a premium for custom wood furniture, but in return, you’re getting heirloom pieces that will last decades or longer. Not to mention, they are repairable since they are constructed from solid wood, not veneer. I hope you have the chance to work with him.”

“I’ve worked with Alex three times for custom pieces for a small chapel. They are exceptional”

“Alex did an amazing job re-caning my Hans Wegner chairs.”

Custom Commission Process

Commissioning custom furniture begins with a complimentary phone call and then moves through three phases.

Phase I - Inquiry

  • Initial Contact

Reach out with your project idea. Gather as much information you can concerning dimensions, wood species, and inspiration. (If you don’t know yet, that’s ok too).

  • Exploration phone call

We’ll have a complimentary phone call to discuss your project.

  • Sketch and estimate

Based on our phone call, I will email you a simple sketch and estimate for cost and timeline. If you would like to move forward there is a fee for the design phase based on the size of the project, which gets applied to the project total.

Phase II - Design

  • Design Drawings

You will be sent a set of technical drawings for approval. All our designs are drawn by hand. (Samples can be seen in our custom portfolio).

  • Iterations

We will discuss details and make appropriate changes to the design to get the design you want. At this time a cost and timeline will also be finalized.

  • Deposit

To begin building your piece of a furniture a 50% deposit is required. (The design fee is applied to the deposit.) The deposit gets you into the schedule and is a commitment to the design presented. Changes after a deposit could incur additional costs.

Phase III - Build

  • Lumber Selection

Lumber is hand selected for each project.

  • Process Updates

You will receive updates on your project at least once a week.

  • Completion

Once your project is complete, you will receive photos, and the final 50% payment is due for shipping or delivery.

  • Shipping or Delivery

Shipping and delivery are discussed on a case by case dbasis. If local to northern New Jersey I will often deliver a piece of furniture myself. For farther deliveries “white-glove” movers will blanket wrap your furniture and bring it into your home.

  • Getting started is simple. Reach out through our contact form. Please indicate whether you are interested in a piece from the collection or a new custom project. If you are looking for something custom please include as much information as you can to start the conversation.

  • Alessandro & Maria Design is a local custom furniture studio run by myself, Alexander Lohn. I bring the design background of architecture school, sensibilities of living with Franciscan Friars, and skills of having attended the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Maine, one of the premiere fine furniture schools in the United States. . There is something truly wonderful with getting to have something really made for you and to know the person who made it. I deal with both the design and the build which makes for a higher quality end product.

  • All of our lumber is sourced from North America from sustainably harvested sources. If sustainably harvested wood is a highly renewable resource. Getting the wood from the United States or Canada also reduced environmental impact from shipping overseas. Additionally, all of our finishes are low-VOC. Details can be acquired by request.

  • We work mostly in wood and traditional woven features such as danish cord, rush, and caning. These can be seen in our custom portfolio here.

We do not currently offer upholstery or metalwork but are working on establishing relationships with other local craftspeople.

  • Shipping or delivery are discussed on a case by case basis. If you are local to northern New Jersey I often make deliveries myself for a fee based on size of the project and distance. For longer distances I have relationships with “white-glove” delivery services who will blanket wrap your project and place it in your home.
