Our Offer

Alessandro & Maria Design was founded by Alexander Lohn in response to a built environment that felt increasingly impermanent, cold, and inauthentic. In a world where most furniture is produced with cheaply manufactured materials, that are often toxic and produced overseas, we build made-to-order furniture pieces from domestically and sustainably sourced hardwoods, using low-VOC hand applied finishes, produced locally, beautifully designed to not go out of style, with a quality that will last the rest of your life.

Our lives are built of the everyday moments in our homes. The furniture we touch affects us. Who doesn’t love a solid piece of furniture that has lasted decades and feels solid, real, grounded. The mundane moments of our home life are the stuff of our lives. You can build them out of timeless furniture you will want to return to year after year.

Commission a custom piece of furniture made just for you.

Custom projects make up most of our work. You can view our portfolio to see past custom projects for homeowners, churches, restaurants, and designers.

Once upon a time all of our furniture was custom built by a local builder. With us you don’t just get custom options but a relationship with myself, Alexander Lohn, who will both design and build the piece with you. More details on the process of custom work below.

  • "100% recommend Alex and his team. He is an incredible craftsman. I've contracted multiple items from Alex over the years, and he always goes above and beyond. He has a knack for designing and producing exactly what you want, even if you don't have a fully formed idea."

Custom Commission Process

To commission a custom piece of furniture you begin by reaching out and then we work through the following three phases.

Phase I - Inquiry

  • Initial Contact

Reach out with your project idea. Gather as much information you can as far as dimensions, wood species, and inspiration. (If you don’t know yet that’s ok too).

  • Exploration phone call

We’ll have a complimentary phone call to discuss your project. At the end of this phone call I will have the information to provide you with an estimate on cost and timeline.

  • Sketch and estimate

Based on our phone call I will email you a simple sketch and estimate for cost and timeline. If you would like to move forward we move to the design phase. There is a fee for the design phase based on the size of the project, which gets applied to the project total.

Phase II - Design

  • Design Drawings

You will be sent a set of technical drawings for approval based on our previous discussions. All our designs are drawn by hand for your approval. (Samples can be seen in our custom portfolio).

  • Iterations

At this point we will discuss details and make appropriate changes to the design to get the design you want. At this time a cost and timeline will also be finalized.

  • Deposit

To begin building your piece of a furniture a 50% deposit is required. (The design fee is applied to the deposit.) The deposit gets you into the schedule and is a commitment to the design presented. Changes after a deposit could incur additional costs.

Phase III - Build

  • Lumber Selection

Lumber is hand selected for reach project and laid our for your project specifically for beauty and quality.

  • Process Updates

Once the build begins you will receive photo updates on your furniture on a minimum weekly basis.

  • Completion

Once the project is done, final photos will be sent and the final 50% payment is due to relase for shipping or delivery.

  • Shipping or Delivery

Shipping and delivery are discussed on a case by case delivery. If local to northern New Jersey I will often deliver a piece of furniture myself. For further deliveries I have relationships with “white-glove” movers who will blanket wrap your furniture and bring it into your home.

  • Alessandro & Maria Design is a local custom furniture studio run by myself, Alexander Lohn. I bring the design background of architecture school, sensibilities of living with Franciscan Friars, and skills of having attended the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Maine, one of the premiere fine furniture schools in the United States. . There is something truly wonderful with getting to have something really made for you and to know the person who made it. I deal with both the design and the build which makes for a higher quality end product.

  • All of our lumber is sourced from North America from sustainably harvested sources. If sustainably harvested wood is a highly renewable resource. Getting the wood from the United States or Canada also reduced environmental impact from shipping overseas. Additionally, all of our finishes are low-VOC. Details can be acquired by request.

  • We work mostly in wood and traditional woven features such as danish cord, rush, and caning. These can be seen in our custom portfolio here.

We do not currently offer upholstery or metalwork but are working on establishing relationships with other local craftspeople.

  • Shipping or delivery are discussed on a case by case basis. If you are local to northern New Jersey I often make deliveries myself for a fee based on size of the project and distance. For longer distances I have relationships with “white-glove” delivery services who will blanket wrap your project and place it in your home.
